Creativity: Why We Crave It – And How We Lost It
/“Creativity is conceived in our intuition, our hearts, and through our higher power. It is the space where your mind drops into your heart.” – Betsy Burbank
Creativity is the act of turning new and imaginative ideas into reality, or creating meaningful new forms. It’s a two-step process that involves both thinking and producing. If you have ideas and don’t act on them or bring them into form, this is being “imaginative” because you haven’t actually created anything. True creativity requires that you take your ideas and create something new.
Many of us relate creativity to the arts and believe that if we are not child prodigies, then we are not creative. However, it’s important to note that creativity covers a much broader scope than the arts. It’s our fundamental nature. As children, we naturally created on a daily basis, but we lost that ability over time. Our minds started to think, analyze, and judge more – while creating less.
But you’re still being creative to this very day, even if you think you’re not. Here are a few things that we all do in our lives that qualify as being creative:
- Making a flower arrangement
- Writing a letter
- Planting a garden
- Knitting a sweater
- Cooking a meal
- Starting a business
- Painting a picture
- Designing a room in your home
- Putting together an outfit in the morning
- Doodling
- Writing a story
- Starting a group
- Teaching a class
Get the idea? Virtually anything that began as an idea in your mind that you brought into existence is creativity.
When you say, “Oh, I’m not creative”, you’re essentially slamming a giant door and shutting out so many wonderful possibilities. I am here to tell you that everyone is creative. It is our birthright and natural way of being – we just have a tendency to lose our ability to immerse ourselves in the journey for the pure joy of it as we grow older.
Keeping your creativity alive is so important because it’s how you express yourself. Your creations mirror back who you are and what you’re feeling. It lets you explore what your feelings mean and what your emotions are trying to tell you. And, being creative feels good! It’s magical. One minute something is a thought, the next it’s a reality. Voila!
I invite you to come paint with me. Take the journey of self reflection and tap into your intuition, heart, and soul. It’s not about being perfect or creating a masterpiece – it’s about the process and the journey. It’s an adventure and an exploration of your core. And it is through this process that you become your truest self and enrich your life for the better.
